SOE and Lucasarts working on Clone Wars MMO
Now before you get too excited here folks, this will be a free to play MMO very similar to SOE’s current free to play MMO title, Free Realms. It will not be anywhere near as life-like as the upcoming Star Wars game, The Old Republic, built by Rival developer Bioware. It still will have it’s appeal to the many Clone Wars fans and may yet prove to be a fun game, but it will certainly not be any sort of Star Wars Galaxies 2.0 as some people had been rumoring about.
The actual title for tihs new MMO being built by Sony Online Entertainment (“SOE”) and LucasArts is “Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures” which is obviously based around the hit Cartoon Network series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The game is expected to launch this fall based on comments made by SOE.
As its free-to-play predecessor, this new MMO will be a browser-based virtual world. Players will be able to pilot familiar starfighters as well as fight other starships, they can duel against iconic characters, as well as play various minigames such as Droid Programming and Speeder Bike Racing. An SOE favorite will also be incorporated into this game, the embedded collectible card game. This was done in other SOE titles previously with some success.
While the Clone Wars Adventures will be free-to-play, players will be able to purchase a monthly membership that will grant them certain status, items, or possibly content that the non paying players will not have access to. They can also be able to buy costume pieces, special items, and other unique accessories through microtransactions with SOE’s digital currency, Station Cash.
As with Free Realms, Clone Wars Adventures will be designed to be a safe online environment for young kids and families. It will offer parent customizable safety options, which includes an emote based type list of chat text and allowed playtime settings.
